School Counseling

Supporting the Beachwood City Schools mission to develop intellectual entrepreneurs with a social conscience, the comprehensive school counseling program at Hilltop Elementary encourages all students to reach their unique and fullest potential. The school counseling program facilitates the partnership of students, families, teachers, administrators and community members by enhancing the academic, career and personal/social development of all students.

• Every child is a unique individual.

• Every child deserves to learn and grow in a safe and healthy environment.
• Every child can learn and grow to their fullest potential.
• A school counselor is a resource and advocate for all students, staff, parents and community.
• A school counseling program should be comprehensive in scope, developmental in nature and preventative in design.
• A school counseling program should be intentional and include academic, career and personal/social components. 
   

Our comprehensive counseling services support the holistic well-being and academic success of our students through individual counseling, group sessions, and classroom lessons.

Individual Counseling

I am available to meet individually with a student in circumstances when a student's educational success is being impacted. The focus of individual sessions is to improve the student's social skills, discuss feelings, and to empower problem-solving methods. When more attention and intervention is required, I can provide resources to parents to access counseling services within the community.

Group Counseling

Small group counseling sessions are offered based on need. This type of counseling environment allows students to give and receive help from their peers who may be experiencing similar feelings or situations.

These are a few examples of small group sessions that have been conducted in the past:

• Social Skills
• Anger Management/Conflict Resolution
• Divorce/Changing Families
• Study Skills/Academic Success
• Grief
• Self Esteem 

Classroom Lessons

Students have classroom guidance lessons every other month. These lessons support student's academic, career, and personal/social development and are aligned with the American School Counselor Association and Common Core State Standards.

• Parent
• Teacher/staff member
• Students can self-refer

What is the process for referral?

Let’s talk! If you believe your student or child may benefit from individual support, I want to hear your concerns. Parents can come in, call, or email to discuss their concerns and put in a request for me to meet with their child.

What is the school counselor's policy on confidentiality?

Confidentiality is maintained in accordance with ethical guidelines and legal requirements with the following three exceptions:

• Harm to self or others
• Abuse or neglect
• Subpoena, court or other legal proceedings

I will take appropriate action, such as informing parents and/or outside agencies, to protect the student if a student engages in behavior that presents a clear and imminent danger to themselves and/or others.
